50 years of theatre past and present

In Q:, veteran director Ang Gey Pin examines, together with the graduating cohort of Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), renowned Singapore works and the responses they engender today.

Taking off from the plays of Kuo Pao Kun (The Silly Little Girl And The Funny Old Tree; The Eagles And The Cat) and Lim Jen Erh (Three Families Blessings – originally a traditional Hokkien opera), the ensemble questions, confronts and investigates their own responses, finally presenting it to the audience – who witness it as a stripped back, bare bones and truthful theatre experience.

“The chosen scripts are our starting points of questioning, meeting and confronting. And the scripts are also our point of departure … I hope our attempts to encounter these past works will not be solely a celebratory moment to our history but verifiable with a renewed spirit on itself.”
- Ang Gey Pin, on motivations and methodologies behind Q:.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

ANG GEY PIN
Pedagogue/Director/Actor

Ang Gey Pin began her theatre practice in Singapore. She is best known for her title role in the late dramatist Kuo Pao Kun’s Chinese version of Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree (1987) and was also artistic director of Theatre OX. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Distinction) in theatre from the University of Hawaii (Manoa).

Ang has worked with the project, The Bridge: Developing Theatre Arts at the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and with Thomas Richards (1994/ 1998-2006) in Italy, performing lead roles in One Breath Left and Dies Irae: My Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show, which toured across Europe and Asia.

Since 2006, she has begun her pedagogical work within institutions and via Sourcing Within, comprising of collaborations and work sessions. Today, Sourcing Within has inter-connected a network of performing artists of diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds.

Currently, Ang is a PhD candidate in Drama: Practice-as-Research at the University of Kent, Canterbury, UK. Her research investigates Ang’s own associative link to her cultural source, emphasising an embodied practice in Taijiquan and songs of her tradition. Wandering Sounds is her latest performance in development, as partial fulfilment of her study.

Her recent directorial work in Singapore include Leaping Fish in the City (In Source Theatre, 2013) and Wandering.Birds (Esplanade The Studios 2011 season).
