"It's possible to express deep emotion with just the slightest movement.”
— Kanze Yoshimasa, Noh master teacher, Shokubun Menjo, Head of Kanze Kyuhkoh-kai, recognised by the Japanese government as holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of Nohgaku
This year, as ITI celebrates its 25th anniversary, we honour our enduring partnership with master teachers Kanze Yoshimasa, Kuwata Takashi, and the Kanze Kyuhkoh-kai (Kanze School of Noh). For over two decades, they have returned to Singapore to share the wisdom and techniques of their art form, allowing each cohort of ITI students to experience the rigour, discipline, and artistry of Nohgaku: a masterclass on minimalism and control, subtlety and precision - learned through movement, chanting, masks, and props.
An Evening of Noh will include a showcase of shimai (short dance sections) and selected scenes from Noh plays presented by the students, led by master teachers Kanze Yoshimasa and Kuwata Takashi, and accompanied by musician Nakamori Kennosuke.
“The simple truth is that traditional theatres like Noh are a compression of understanding and knowledge about performance which simply cannot be replicated today.” - T. Sasitharan, ITI Co-Founder & Director
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session offering insight into ITI’s immersive learning process.
The 2025 Noh term at ITI is supported by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry Singapore Foundation.
