ITI is as much committed to the research as the practice and training of contemporary intercultural theatre.

One major research platform is the Asian Intercultural Conference. This was conceived in 2008 by ITI as a forum to provide a critical review of contemporary theatre and intercultural work in Asia. Its aim is to explore the emerging paradigms in contemporary theatre – how new ideas and new politics transform practices and shift boundaries. Focusing on the intercultural work taking place in Asia, the exploration is informed primarily by the work, outcomes and intercultural performance research that has emanated from ITI since its establishment in 2000 as the Theatre Training & Research Programme (TTRP). The conference serves as a platform for an exchange of ideas among master teachers of traditional Asian theatre forms, scholars and practitioners of contemporary theatre, through talks, discussions and performance demonstrations.

ITI also intends to build a collection of research conducted by its associates and collaborators, with plans to make these working papers and other publications available to students and the public.
